What our grads got up to in their first year

Our Future Leaders programme is an opportunity for Graduates to really explore their strengths, likes, dislikes and even weaknesses across a chosen function at IHG. The specially designed structure sets out to throw you straight in so you learn fast, become really adaptable and develop skills you may not already have and enhance those you do.

Nail has spent the last year doing just that. He chose Rooms Division to undertake his training in and has had “a year to remember”.  Since then, Nail has become Assistant Executive Housekeeper and he works at InterContinental Malta.

What attracted you to the Future Leaders programme?

It was a number of reasons; I felt the demanding structure is what helped me learn quickly, adapt, and prepare for a leadership role. Moreover, I really liked the fact that we would be given a CSR project to run which helped me develop lots of different skills. The scale of the company and number of different brands also played a part in my decision. Having the chance to experience working in one or more of the brands to better understand how each brand brings a distinct unique selling point to our customers was very appealing.

What function did you choose to train in and why?

I chose to train in Rooms Division simply for having always instinctively felt that this function of the hotel comes most naturally to me. It gives me the opportunity to be in touch with my guests and gives me the variety I need in my daily routine. I also believe in order to become a successful General Manager one must have knowledge and experience in this function.

Have you moved locations, made any promotions, travelled with your role?

Since starting the Future Leaders programme I have been promoted to Assistant Executive Housekeeper which I am really proud of.

What’s your proudest achievement so far?

My proudest achievement so far has been my promotion to this new role and the trust and support I am receiving from my peers and colleagues.

What is your long-term career goal?

My long-term career goal is to become a successful General Manager. I believe once I reach this goal, I will then aim my sights to my next challenge – since joining the Future Leaders programme challenge is something I am not shy of, rather it excites me.

What would you say is the most important part of your job is? And what is your favourite?

This is a hard question, because I believe there are a number of important parts of my job. I would have to say that the most important part of my job is to keep my colleagues happy and motivated – I do this by helping them break down the barriers keeping them from successfully executing their tasks.

My favourite part of the job is knowing that every day I will face a different challenge than yesterday. The amount of trust and responsibility I receive from my colleagues and peers motivates me further and makes working here all that more special!
